Bay essential oil is a warming oil. It is commonly used on sore muscles or mild strains or sprains. It is reputed to reduce pain and improve circulation to the affected area.
Aroma therapists sometimes recommend Bay for respiratory problems. Bay essential oil is vaporized or diffused in warm water into the air and inhaled to help loosen phlegm to help clear the lungs.
One of the most common traditional uses of Bay essential oil is for the overall health of the scalp. Diluted oil in a carrier oil like sweet almond or grape seed is applied to the scalp and thought to help stimulate hair growth for thinning hair. It is also thought to balance oily hair, cleanse the scalp and fight dandruff.

This Bay “West Indies” is produced in Jamaica, an island in the Caribbean island chain. The name is a little confusing but at the time Christopher Columbus discovered America he thought he had arrived in India. Therefore, Native Americans were called Indians and the nearby islands were called “The West Indies”. This species of Bay is now grown in other areas like Venezuela and Oceana but more is produced in the Caribbean and the most preferred essential oil comes from the Caribbean.
Bay essential oil is steam distilled from leaves produced by the small Pimenta racemosa tree. Bay West Indies essential oil has a spicy, fresh peppery scent with a lasting sweet balsamic undertone. The oil has a deep brown color with a slight orange tint.
It is added to many hair formulas for men not only for the hair stimulation but also because it smells like bay rum, a popular masculine scent. It is a powerful oil and generally not used in full body massage oils but normally on smaller areas of the skin or diffused into the air. It is a popular addition to creams, lotions, soaps and perfumes. If added to a massage blend Aroma & More does not recommend to use more than 0.4%.
Caution: Use in very low concentration if applying to the skin. May cause sensitivity and irritate sensitive skin. Do not use if pregnant or on children younger than 6.
