  •           Petitgrain is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree but is different than bitter orange essential oil which is cold pressed or expressed from bitter orange peels. Petitgrain from the bitter orange tree is preferred for skin application and is sometimes referred to as “Poor Mans Neroli”. Neroli is also extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree. Petitgrain partners well with Neroli in aroma and use and is a great low-cost booster for Neroli formulations.
Today Petitgrain oil is extracted from the leaves of the tree but in the past was once extracted from the small green unripe oranges. The name Petitgrain comes from the French language where the practice was pioneered, meaning little grains or seeds.
