The Commiphora erythaea tree is in the same family as Frankincense and Myrrh, and the extract is in the same class as these extracts. In use, it is similar to myrrh, however the aroma is very sweet. Its power makes it difficult to appreciate at full strength but when diluted it adds a lot to a formula in very small amounts. Opoponax has a long history of use in perfumes and incense and has a strong fixative quality that holds a scent for a long slow release. This oil is highlighted by aromatic notes ranging from balsamic and resinous to sweet, earthy and fruity.
Opoponax is said to be emotionally strengthening and inspire creativity. Like Myrrh, it is calming and focusing, useful to reduce stress and anxiety.
For centuries, Opoponax has been used as an antiseptic and for clearing respiratory congestion. Topically, a small amount of opoponax can be blended with coconut oil and applied to sore muscles to relax the muscle and reduce cramping.
