Galbanum is cultivated mainly in Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan. The dried resin is collected and used in incense or exported mainly to Europe or North America to be distilled into essential oil.

Galbanum has been used in incenses since antiquity and has great potential in natural perfumery. It makes a nice replacement for conifer needle oils like pine, fir and spruce. It has a spicy green pine and musky scent that is missing the trace unpleasant notes that can be present in pine oils.
