Other Sandalwoods:
It has a medium scent yet it comes through even when combined with strong aromas especially when warmed by the body or other methods.
Like many essential oils, Sandalwood quality varies depending on the environment where it is grown. Some Indonesian Sandalwood is the same botanic species as Mysore, but the quality of oil produced is different. One possibility is that the first 7 years of the trees life Sandalwood is as a parasite on another tree. Different original hosts may be one of the reasons the same species produces a different oil when grown in a different environment.
Sandalwood Mysore Santalum album is strictly controlled in India and only a limited amount is released for sale each year.
As supply becomes shorter, quality has declined as producers began to extract oil from bark, roots, sawdust and etc... Sometimes Sandalwood is smuggled in from other regions to be sold as Mysore Sandalwood. Our Sandalwood essential oil is extracted by the original methods of extracting from Heartwood Only and is produced Only from Sandalwood from the Mysore region.
Sandalwood Mysore has perhaps the longest shelf life of all essential oils. If you can find samples 10 – 25 years old stored well they are probably still good. The chemistry may change and the aroma may even improve over time.
Australia has decades old efforts cultivating Sandalwood Santalum Album on a large scale in progress but won’t begin producing for some time. Australia normally grows another species called Santalum spicatum.
West Indian sandalwood is a completely different species called Amyris balsamifera which is not grown in India at all, but in the Caribbean Islands which are sometimes called the “West Indies” near South America. It is a balsam and not similar to Sandalwood in composition, aroma or therapeutic use at all.
African Sandalwood Brachyleana hutchinsii or Mahuhu oil is also a Balsam and not similar to Sandalwood in aroma or function.
Additionally, there are members of the Sandalwood family grown in many places from Indonesia, New Guinea, Vanuatu, Hawaii and etc... Some of the other oils from the Santalum family may have some similar functions but they are lacking Sandalwood Mysore's aroma
