- Eucalyptus Lemon or Lemon Eucalyptus has a long history in the fragrance industry and traditional healthcare but today it is most commonly used in natural mosquito repellents. The insecticidal properties which help to repel insects comes from the citronellal content of the oil. Eucalyptus Lemon normally has twice as much as citronella and Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is the only natural oil recommended by the CDC to repel Aedes aegypti mosquito, the species of mosquito which spreads the Zika virus and Dengue fever in most countries.

This is a high potency Eucalyptus Lemon essential oil with citronellal content normally 5% to 8% higher than some others from other countries.
To improve the mosquito repellent qualities, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is processed from Eucalyptus Lemon essential oil to convert much of the citronellal into PMD (para methane 3,8 diol). The PMD is a much longer lasting repellant that has been shown to perform better than chemical repellents. PMD is also synthesized however, as is normally the case, synthesized compounds come along with small amounts of harmful compounds that are difficult and expensive to reduce.
Unprocessed Eucalyptus Lemon essential oil still works well as a mosquito repellent in candles and diffusers. If applying to the skin you can also extend its effectiveness by blending into a slow absorption carrier oil like soybean oil at 5% to 10% which stays on the surface of the skin and also has a mild mosquito repellent quality. Almost all essential oils must be diluted before applying to the skin anyway.
Eucalyptus Lemon is not similar to Eucalyptus in chemistry or aroma. The aroma is more similar to citronella than Lemon or Eucalyptus.
Eucalyptus Lemon essential oil has other benefits as well. It can be used as a treatment for asthma, athlete's foot, candida, colds, cuts, infections, insect repellent, sore throat, sores and wounds. The fungicidal and antiviral actions of this oil make help protect against infections.
Eucalyptus Lemon is generally regarded as safe (GRAS). It contains no known carcinogens and contains compounds known for their anticancer activity.
Note: Not for internal use. Most essential oils cannot be taken internally, but even when they can, essential oils are highly concentrated and require dilution, special training and caution that Aroma & More does not yet provide. You can never drink any essential oils at 100% strength or diluted in water-based liquids.
Caution: Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) when used properly. Essential oils can be harmful if used improperly. Information is provided for educational purposes only. It is up to the customer to determine if the product is right for their intended purpose. Special consideration should be made before applying essential oils to pregnant women, children or the elderly. If under a doctor's care, please consult the physician before using essential oils. If applying to skin essential oils must be diluted correctly and Aroma & More recommends testing on a small area of skin to check for reaction before attempting a full body massage.
