- Occasionally, we have the opportunity to obtain a truly exceptional lot of some items we will be classifying as “Select”.
India continues to impress us on some products with advancements in quality. This lot has a very high patchouli alcohol content normally around 34%, smooth aroma with a dark, rich, thick appearance. Average quality Patchouli can have between 22% - 28% Patchouli alcohol content and a somewhat sharp or bitter aroma. Therapeutically, fresh oils are normally better but aromatically Patchouli may have an even better aroma after 15 - 25 years of storage. It is a valuable oil when shelf life and long lasting holding effect is needed.

In Perfumery patchouli is one of the most commonly used fixative essential oils. It mingles with the other oils in a blend and holds the scent for a much more lasting effect. Even though the aroma is not beautiful, more like a smoky/earthy scent, a premium quality patchouli is a common ingredient in popular perfumes and colognes by well known manufacturers. As an addition to insect repellents, the fixative effect combined with its insect repelling ability will assist your blends to last longer.
Traditionally In aromatherapy, patchouli is probably best known for its relaxation, anxiety, antidepressant & aphrodisiac qualities. But there are many more therapeutic uses including:
Acne/Antibacterial/Anti-inflammatory/Antimicrobial/Antiseptic/Antiviral
Appetite suppressant/Athlete’s foot
Cellulite
Decongestant/Dermatitis/Diuretic
Eczema
Insomnia
Laxative
Scars/Skin Care
It is even used to make incense for meditation and for insect bites and repellent. In India in is common to use on sleep rugs to chase away insects improve relaxation and sleep.
It is said to rejuvenate skin cells for aging skin and also used on dry skin, acne, and scars.
There are many essential oils useful for fighting viral infections such as cold and flu during the daytime but most will keep will keep you awake at night. Patchouli is one of the useful essential oils for night time therapy and the aroma may even remind you of sleeping next to a campfire, or blend a small amount with a premium high altitude Lavender for a softer scent and a good night’s sleep.
Note: Most essential oils cannot be taken internally, but even when they can, essential oils are highly concentrated and require dilution, special training and caution that Aroma & More does not yet provide. You can never drink any essential oils at 100% strength or diluted in water-based liquids.
