Lemon verbena essential oil is derived from the leaves of the Lippia citriodora  (synonym Aloysia citriodora, Aloysia triphylla, Lippia triphylla, Verbena, Lemon Beebrush) plant, a perennial shrub native to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina, though it is now cultivated in regions like Southern Europe and Northern Africa. It is primarily obtained through steam distillation, resulting in a light yellow to orange, transparent, mobile liquid with a bright, sweet-tart, lemony aroma that features fresh green, crisp citrus-like, and light floral nuances. This oil is classified as a top note in perfumery and is known for its uplifting, refreshing, and citrus-herbal scent.

Aromatherapy and Mood Enhancement: The uplifting citrus aroma can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve mood. It’s often used in aromatherapy to create a calming atmosphere. May help alleviate symptoms of anxiety or mild depression when diffused or inhaled.

Antioxidant Properties: Contains compounds like citral, which may offer antioxidant effects, helping to combat oxidative stress in the body.

Anti-inflammatory Potential: Some studies suggest lemon verbena extracts have anti-inflammatory properties, which may extend to the essential oil, potentially aiding in reducing inflammation when diluted and applied topically.

Digestive Support: Traditionally used to soothe digestive issues like bloating or indigestion. A diluted massage on the abdomen may help relieve discomfort.

Skin and Hair Care: When properly diluted, it may help with oily skin or acne due to its astringent properties. It’s also used in hair care for a refreshing scent and potential scalp health benefits.

Phototoxicity Warning — Avoid sun exposure (or use strong sunscreen/clothing coverage) for at least 12–24 hours after applying to skin. Many experts recommend a maximum dermal dilution of 0.9% (about 5–6 drops per ounce of carrier oil) or less.

Insect Repellent: The citral content may repel insects, making it useful in natural bug-repellent blends.

Antimicrobial Effects: Preliminary research indicates lemon verbena may have antibacterial and antifungal properties, potentially useful for cleaning or minor skin infections when diluted.
