Cedarwood Virginia is a slow growing evergreen tree in the cypress family with a narrow densely covered crown. Most of the essential oil comes from the middle region of the east coast of the United States.
It is different in aroma to some other Cedarwood oils. It is heavy, woody and earthier. Like patchouli and vetiver, it is used extensively in perfumery for its fixative (holding) characteristics and more masculine scent. A small amount has the ability to make a scent last.
In Aromatherapy it is used to calm anxiety and nervous tension. It is said to have a mild sedative effect.
Historically, it was used to on rashes, cystitis, urinary tract infections, and genital warts. This suggests it may have some disinfectant capability.
Cedarwood Virginian also has antiseptic and astringent properties may be useful for on oily skin and hair, acne, dandruff, and seborrhea.
Cedarwood also has good broad range insect repellent qualities to a variety of insects such as termites, carpet beetles, chewing insects, fleas, cockroaches, flies and fire ants. It is also toxic to even more species of insect larvae when sprayed on nests. As an addition to insect repellent formulas, it can improve performance and make the formula last. It is not particularly effective against mosquitos but blending with Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus creates a powerful mosquito repellent with long lasting qualities.
Note: Not for internal use. Most essential oils cannot be taken internally, but even when they can, essential oils are highly concentrated and require dilution, special training and caution that Aroma & More does not yet provide. You can never drink any essential oils at 100% strength or diluted in water-based liquids.
Caution: Essential oils can be harmful if used improperly. Information is provided for educational purposes only. It is up to the customer to determine if the product is right for their intended purpose. Special consideration should be made before applying essential oils to pregnant women, children or the elderly. If under a doctor’s care, please consult the physician before using essential oils. If applying to skin essential oils must be diluted correctly and Aroma & More recommends testing on a small area of skin to check for reaction before attempting a full body massage. Claims have not been evaluated by the FDA.
